HBO Sunday Night: Hung End Credits Music

Sorry for being all over the place with the HBO Sunday Night line up. Next Sunday, I will make sure to post them all together. A friend reminded me to post the music from HBO’s Hung. For one, Hung has a great theme song (as do all of the HBO Sunday night lineup). The show’s Music Supervisor, Mark Wike, selected “I’ll be Your Man” by the Black Keys. Download on iTunes.

This past Sunday’s episode, “Sing it Again, Ray” or “Home Plate” uses the song “Bones” by Map of Africa in the end credits. A very classic rock ‘n’ roll flavor, reminds me of The Rolling Stones (love the piano). I can’t find much on the band at all, but check out the song below.

Movie Trailer Music: Charlie St. Cloud

What’s the best way to grab an audience’s attention into a movie trailer? Use a good song to draw them in. That’s exactly what the people behind Zac Effron’s Charlie St. Cloud did. They created a TV promo for the movie using Airplanes” B.O.B.’s feat. Hayley Williams. Imagine the target audience- fans of Zac Effron. Now imagine the demographic of those fans (minus the cougars). Those fans turn away from the TV during a commerical, and suddently they hear “Airplanes” and look up to the TV. What do they see? Zac Effron in his new movie. Not sure if they will actually go see the movie, but they paid attention to the promo. Download “Airplanes” on iTunes

My favorite use of a great song for a movie trailer is M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” placement in the trailer for Pineapple Express. Whoever placed that song, is a genius. I downloaded that song because of that trailer, and then went to go watch the movie. DOUBLE RAINBOW! Download “Paper Planes” on iTunes.

HBO Sunday Night: True Blood End Credits Song

For those of you who watched this past Sunday’s True Blood episode, “I Got a Right to Sing the Blues,” the song used in the end credits is “Hell’s Bells” by Cary Ann Hearst  Sorry I couldn’t get this out sooner, but it was difficult to find. Once again Music Supervisor Gary Calamar, has introduced us to another unknown artist with a song fitting for the show. Cary’s sound is a mixture of folk and southern rock with some blues influence. And yes, the lyrics at the end of the track is “cocaine makes you grind your teeth at night.” Keep an eye out for her new album- Are You Ready to Die Check her out on facebook or myspace.

An Ode to Hans Zimmer: Composer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception

For those of you who watched Inception recently, I’m sure you were amazed. The movie kicked ass- everything about it, including the score. I noticed that the score in Inception had a similar feel to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. That’s because both scores were composed by famous composer Hans Zimmer. Zimmer has composed many major films, including-Gladiator, Batman Begins, The Lion King, and Pirates of the Carribean, among others.

So far Zimmer has won eight Oscars for movies such as Rain Man, As Good As It Gets, Sherlock Holmes, and Gladiator. He has also won seven Grammys.

His score for Inception was brilliant, allowing the audience to be captured by every scene. Go watch the movie if you haven’t seen it already. Take a listen to the track entitled “Time.” Download the album on iTunes.

HBO Sunday Night: Entourage

In tonight’s Entourage episode entitled “Tequila Sunrise” the song used in the end credits was “Funnel Of Love” by Wanda Jackson. The song was also used in Guy Richie’s Rocknrolla. The song was produced back in early 1960, when Jackson was known as the Queen of Rockabilly. She was a pioneer for female rock’n'roll. Download it on itunes. (different version that used in Entourage).

“Half Full Glass Of Wine” by Tame Impala was the song used in the end credits of last week’s Entourage episode, “Dramedy.” They are a Australian psychedelic rock band who have played along side the likes of the Black Keys, Muse and Rise Against. They recently were the opening act on MGMT’s 2010 tour. Download on itunes.

HBO Sunday Night: Music from True Blood and Entourage

A new episode from Season 3 of True Blood aired last night, entitled “9 Crimes.” The music on this show is fantastic thanks to Music Supervisor Gary Calamar. The theme song confirms his genius (“Bad Thing” by Jace Everett).  The song used in the end credits is the acoustic version of Damien Rice’s “9 Crimes.” Below is the official video for “9 Crimes.” Download the song on iTunes.

Entourage Season Premiere

It’s summertime, so all our favorite fall shows have come to end. However, with summer come some of cable’s most popular shows. HBO kicked off the season premiere of Entourage last week. Personally, what stuck out the most was the song, Music Supervisor Scott Vener, used in the end credits- “Above the Clouds” by Gang Starr feat. Inspectah Deck. Not only does the placement pay tribute to the late MC Guru of Gang Starr, bu it fits the scene perfectly- Vinnie Chase faces his fear, escapes death and is now ready to conquer life. Enter beat by DJ Premier- nice. Download on Itunes

What was that song?

Do you ever watch a TV show or movie and hear music you like? Music Supervisors are those responsible for thoughtfully placing (syncing) music in TV shows. For those of you who watch shows such as Entourage, Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy I’m sure you have noticed music. You’ve probably downloaded a song or two. Artists such as Kid Cudi and MGMT have both gotten huge exposure from their music being featured on these shows.

I compare today’s best music supervisors to when Radio Disc Jockeys controlled the airwaves and told us what we should listen to rather than the generic and repetitive playlists that are programmed on radio today. They have complete creative control, selecting music that invokes a stronger emotional connection between audience and actor. It has become a great way for people to discover new music, especially from more independent artists.

Below is an example of great music placement courtesy of Scott Vener- Music Supervisor for HBO’s “Entourage” and the newly renewed “How to Make it in America.” The song is Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees.” The scene may be a bit emo for the show, but nonetheless it’s a great song.
